UMass Dartmouth Defeats Newbury in Women's Tennis Season Opener

The UMass Dartmouth Corsairs swept the Nighthawks of Newbury College by a score of 9-0 today in a decisive match in Chestnut Hill.  UMass Dartmouth improved their record to 2-0 while the host team fell to 0-1. 

The stellar serve of Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) overtook Newbury's Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA/Palmer) in the first singles match by scores of 0-6, 2-6.  Wojtowicz and Kristen Connors (Riverside, RI/East Providence) paired up for a competitive battle in doubles play but were defeated by UMass Dartmouth's Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA/Holliston) and Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah) by a score of 8-2. 

The Nighthawks received a gutsy performance from freshman Brittani Robinson (Boston, MA/Cathedral) as she battled Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee) in the fifth singles match.  The hard fought battle finished with scores of 1-6, 2-6, claiming Morey as its victor.

The Nighthawks will host the Beacons of UMass Boston on Thursday, September 11, 2008.  Match begins at 3:30 PM.
