UMass Boston Overtakes Newbury in Spirited Women's Tennis Match
The Beacons of UMass Boston came away with a 1-8 win over the Newbury Nighthawks today in Chestnut Hill, MA. With the loss, Newbury dropped to 0-2 while UMass Boston improved to 1-0.
Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA/Palmer) battled Carolina Gonzalez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham) in first singles action. Wojtowicz took the first set by a score of 6-2, lost a tough decision 4-6 in the second set, and finally was defeated 0-6 in the third set. Paired with Kristen Connors (Riverside, RI/East Providence) in first doubles, the duo put on a brilliant performance against UMass Boston's Gonzalez and Emily Johnson (Saugus, MA/Saugus). The Beacons jumped out early, but the Nighthawks responded going point for point for the duration of the match. Ultimately, UMass Boston was victorious, winning by a final score of 9-7.
Newbury received another bold performance from freshman Brittani Robinson (Boston, MA/Cathedral) as she beat Brittany Engel (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) in the fifth singles match with set scores of 6-4, 6-3.
The Nighthawks host the Wildcats of Bay Path College on Saturday, September 13, 2008 in their first conference match of the season. Match begins at 3:30 PM.
