Nighthawks Win Conference Match vs. Mariners
The Newbury College Women's Tennis Team beat visiting Mitchell College today in decisive fashion, winning 7-2 in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Nighthawks improve to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Mariners drop to an overall record of 1-6.
The match began with doubles play, where the Nighthawks took the lead 3-0 and never looked back. Anna Collins (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) and Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) had the most decisive victory, beating Mitchell's Miah Manning (Baltic, CT/Putnam) and Sarah Webster (Waterford, CT/Waterford) 8-1. Valentine's day was not yet complete, as she also defeated her opponent in fourth singles action with set scores of 6-0, 6-3. Also playing well for Newbury was Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA/Palmer) who battled Jennifer Travella (Oracle, AZ/Park Ridge) in a tough first singles match. Wojtowicz won the first set 7-6, in a tiebreaker; and clinched victory in the second set by a score of 6-4.
The Nighthawks will face the Wildcats of Bay Path College on Tuesday for a conference match set to start at 3:30 PM in Longmeadow, MA.
