Nighthawks Progress but Fall Short of Victory in Conference Opener vs. Wildcats

The Wildcats of Bay Path College came away with the win in a lengthy Women's Tennis match today in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The final score read 7-2 as Bay Path prevailed in several hard fought battles in both singles and doubles action.  This was Newbury's first conference match since entering the New England Collegiate Conference - adding further excitement to the competitive play.   With the loss, Newbury falls to 0-3 while Bay Path improves to 3-1.

Singles play brought Nighthawk victories from both Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA/Palmer) and Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic).  Wojtowicz defeated Bay Path's Lauren Hangasky (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) by scores of 6-2, 7-6 while Valentine claimed victory over Kara Fox (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford) 7-6, 6-0. 

Wojtowicz joined Kristen Conners (Riverside, RI/East Providence) in first doubles but were unable to overtake Bay Path's Hangasky and Raquel Babeu (North Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) losing by a score of 9-7.  Newbury kept the pressure on their opponents scoring many key points throughout the match; but could not capitalize in the match's final stages. 

Newbury will face Albertus Magnus College in a home match on Tuesday, September 16, 2008.  Play begins at 3:30 PM.
