Nighthawks Knocked Out of Post-Season by Hawks
Leicester, Mass.- The 2011 season came to an abrupt end for the Newbury College women's soccer team, falling to Becker College in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship, 1-0, Tuesday evening.
The two teams played a scoreless 90 minutes before Becker finally caught the break they were looking for 6:03 into overtime. A Newbury defender inadvertently committed a handball in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Becker. The Hawks turned to junior Jodi Theriault (Woodstock, Conn.) to take the kick. Theriault methodically shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net, sending the Hawks into the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.
Becker freshman goalkeeper Katherine Cormier (San Diego, Calif.) turned away four Newbury shots to earn her first postseason win. The Hawks are now 10-8-2 on the season as they advance to the NECC Semifinals to play at Lesley University on Thursday, November, 3rd at 8:15 p.m.
Newbury goalkeeper Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.) made eight saves in the loss including making a terrific save with 11 minutes remaining in regulation to keep the score tied at zero. Newbury's season comes to end with a record of 8-7-1.
