Nighthawks Blank Buccaneers

The Newbury College women's soccer team defeated visiting MA Maritime Academy in their home opener 2-0 today in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Nighthawks outshot their opponents 31-5, with freshman Ashleigh Guy (North Smithfield, RI/North Smithfield) leading the offense with two assists on the afternoon. 

The first half saw the Nighthawks dominate on the offensive side of the field producing 18 shots in the first 45 minutes of play.  Junior Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, MA/Brockton) took five of those, finding the back of the net at 21:27 to give Newbury the early lead. 

Early in the second half, Guy found freshman Holly Ballard (Douglas, MA/David Prouty) who scored her first collegiate goal at 47:17 giving Newbury the 2-0 advantage.  The Nighthawks would take 11 more shots before the game was through, but could not capitalize on their attempts. 

MA Maritime goalkeeper Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, MA/Chatham) registered 12 saves for the Buccaneers, while teammate Nicole Newell (Plymouth, MA/Sacred Heart) recorded two shots on goal. 

Newbury travels to Pine Manor College on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 where they look to improve their record to 2-0.  Game time is 4:00 PM.
