Jelani Townsell begins his first season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Newbury College.  Townsell comes to Newbury College from the University of Connecticut where he helped lead the Huskies to the 2011 NCAA National Championship under the supervision of Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun.  During his time at UConn, Townsell was a Graduate Assistant as the Academic Advisor for the Men’s Basketball team.  Townsell was responsible for coordination class schedules, study halls, grade monitoring and assigning tutors for the student athletes.   

Prior to his time at UConn, Townsell served as the Head Assistant for the Men’s Basketball program at Regis College in Weston, MA.  Townsell assisted in facilitating the first men’s basketball program in history at Regis College and was responsible for conducting basketball clinics, camps and newsletters in addition to the shared responsibilities of on court coaching, film exchange, practice plans, recruit database management and academic improvement programming. 

A native of Cincinnati, OH, Townsell received a Bachelors of Science in Sports and Recreation Management in 2007 from Temple University while serving as Men’s Basketball Manager under the supervision of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney.  Townsell went on to receive his Masters in Sports Management in 2011 from UConn while serving as Graduate Assistant.

Garrett Quinn enters his third season as assistant men’s basketball coach. Last year he helped guide the Nighthawks basketball program to their first  New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) semifinals appearance with an 8-6 conference record and 11-18 overall.

Previously he spent two years as a Communications Specialist with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) overseeing and advising conference wide initiatives pertaining to GNAC student-athletes. He also assists with updating conference statistics and the website as well as All-Conference voting.

Prior to the GNAC, he was a Payroll Manager at WEEI Sports Radio where he transmitted bi-weekly payroll for 400 employees and communicated with Entercom’s corporate headquarters and assisted win special financial projects.

Quinn also serves as the Head Men's Golf Coach at Newbury College and away from the basketball court, he is an avid golfer who grew up on the St. Mark's Gold Course in Southborough, Mass. Quinn earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of New Hampshire in 2007 and is currently earning a Masters in Sports Leadership at Northeastern University. He currently resides in Cambridge, Mass.

Mark Holmes

Holmes enters his first season as assistant men’s basketball coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge to Newbury after being in the coaching profession for the past six years. Holmes comes to Newbury after previous stints at Ben Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston as well as Framingham State College. 

Originallyfrom Prince George’s County in Maryland, Holmes is a 1998 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and was a member of the 92-93 UMass Dartmouth men’s basketball team that went to the NCAA Division III Final Four National Championship in Buffalo, NY. In the following year of 94-95, he was a member of the team that went to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen Tournament in Franklin, PA. He has nine years of teaching experience, which began at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Away from the basketball court, Holmes is working as a special education teacher in the Boston Public School System and completed his Master’s degree  in Special Education at Cambridge College in Cambridge, Mass. His duties will include assisting with recruiting, player skill development and fund raising.

Stephen Julien, originally from Trinidad, but raised in Boston has been a staple in the Boston basketball community for many years. Coach Julien had his first coaching opportunity with the Church Youth Organization League for St. Thomas Church in Jamaica Plain. Over the past ten years, Coach Steve, as he is known by many, has coached with a myriad of former NBA players including Detroit Pistons Point Guard Will Blalock, Cleveland Cavaliers/ Chicago Bulls Small Forward Demetrius Nichols and Houston Rockets Small Forward Antonio Anderson. He has also had the pleasure of coaching various overseas players such as Tony Lee, PJ Young, Troy Gillenwater, and Austin Freeman. Most recently, Coach Steve served as the Head Coach for the “Boston Bombers” Women’s Semi Pro Basketball Team. When he is not coaching young basketball players, Julien works with various groups throughout Boston organizing basketball tournaments throughout the summer.
